"Personal Sins Should Not Require Press Releases"

Posted by Mason Jamal Friday, February 19, 2010

Michael Wilbon of ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption” described the media frenzy best when he stated on yesterday’s show that “this is the great overreaction in the history of broadcast television.” Even that may have been an understatement. The idea that Tiger Woods needed to apologize to the American public is all types of irrational. Did Jesus walk the American public down the aisle and give them away to be lawfully wedded to the Coblinasian? One would think so with all the moralizing and sanctimonious sniping coming from the pews.

Nothing is more absurd than the idea of the media being the arbiter of all things moral. The media has celebrity rabies. Ever since the scandal broke, they’ve foaming at the mouth waiting for today’s event to finally happen. All the while, they’ve been trying their best to infect their viewers and readers with the notion that the public’s right to know supersedes Tiger’s right to exist. Even Tiger himself said, via written statement, back in early December that “personal sins should not require press releases.” All Tiger needs to do is apologize to his wife and his family, which I’m sure he has done profusely for the last three months and get back to winning tournaments. Contrary to what pundits suggest, none of us have long memories when it comes to things like this no matter how egregious they may seem. One

  1. I'm --->here<--- with you on this. I, too, wrote a few pieces on my blog ( http://bit.ly/aLjbqf ) when the sky first fell, but today's collective mediagasm is beyond the pale of objectivity by the media, let alone any semblance of keeping things in perspective. I was watching pre-press conference interviews about what people expected to hear and what they want from Tiger. A lot of it was just straight bullshit. I, for one, do not want, nor expect, Tiger to apologize to me. I don't expect him to apologize to my 14 year-old son, who portrayed Tiger in school project several years ago. I understand the "why," but, honestly, I could have done without the scripted press conference. Well, maybe had the press conference come contemporaneously to the events he's apologize for, my interest may have been more piqued.

I wish the dude well...for real. In the meantime, can we turn our attention back to more compelling issues -- both serious and light at heart?

  3. Very true, but when your cowardly sponsors drop you based on said media's pressure, a little ass kissing via public apology is needed in order to get back under their umbrella. I hope that in the future we look back at this fiasco and laugh, the media is the media and I think everyone is in concert when we say they build up people in order to record them crashing and burning.

  5. Celebrity rabies...yup,that about wraps it up. I've yet to watch this footage and I never will. Reducing ones wacky libido to "Sexual Addiction". NEXT!

  7. I watched the footage and saw/heard something many may have missed. The change in pace at Tiger stating to be trusted again. He intentionally chose these words to drive home the point of the press conference. I felt it was needed to 1) get back in the mindset of golf and 2) tell the media to piss off.

And no, I can't buy that sexual addiction shi* either, Qwami. This term has been made up by a medical industry growing ever dependent on glamorized therapy as a preventative/corrective measure.

  8. The media made this a big deal. I didn't even bother to watch that crap. Tiger Woods isn't the only man who has cheated on his wife.

I'm with Curtis, he's no sex addict, he just likes having sex..with or without his wife.

This should in no way effect his golfing.

    To the media..decues!!!

  9. Yea ever since the news broke, any word of Tiger makes me sick..word..meaning MEDIA'S WORD. They need to chill, get off their butts and find real new stories...

    "The media has celebrity rabies."

    What he said....

  11. I can't remember any sports personality before Tiger being inclined to offer such a public apology, politicians yes, sports people no. I just wish he and his wife would be left alone. It has no bearing on his sporting ability as said by @sunnydelyte21.

  13. The reason the media is so into this particular 'witch hunt' is because a Dude like Tiger, one, has that name "Tiger". When used outside of golf and beating the shit out of other golfers,it's quite lame.

Second, they knew Tiger would cop to their pounding on his image. He has always struck me as a "Rodney King statement", kind of guy. " OK, I'll do what it takes to make this thing go away." "Hey guys it's me, 'TIGER', your friend, remember I'm not like them.

And anyway, what kind of insult was that he hurled at the press, about the apology, weak at best.Tiger is doing what he has done all along. He is hitting his ball straight down the fair way. Avoiding sand traps, and showing surprising accuracy on the green.
